Tac is famous for Gorsium, the Roman archaeological park in its outskirts. This open-air museum provides a glimpse into life in a flourishing city during the 2nd to 4th century BC. The setting exudes the air of Antiquity.
Tác is located southeast of Székesfehérvár in the Sárvíz Valley. Its neighbours, the villages of Föveny and Pötölle, were destroyed during the Turkish occupation.
The excavations carried out here have resulted in the largest Hungarian outdoor museum from the Roman period. During these archaeological digs the remains of the former Hungarian settlement of Föveny were also discovered: medieval residential buildings, church and a cemetery.
The extended park that surrounds the ruins of Gorsium creates a Mediterranean atmosphere with stone monuments of the Roman period, an exhibition of the most attractive finds, and a Greco-Roman type theatre able to accommodate 1,200 visitors. The season is opened in spring with the ancient celebration of Floralia held between 28th April and 3rd May. During the summer the Ludi Romani - Gorsium Summer Games (Nyári Játékok) take place, featuring theatrical performances.
At Gorsium - Herculia, already the largest archaeological park in the Carpathian Basin, an entire city reminiscent of Pompeii will open up before visitors as the result of ongoing excavations.
How to get there:
By public transport, buses serve Tác from Székesfehérvár. By car, take the M7 motorway, exit at Szabadbattyán south of Székesfehérvár, and continue southeast for 4 kilometres.
